1º Bachibac Oratory: learning through experience

02/02/2023 · [Secondaire]

Using debates in the classroom provides students the opportunity to work in a collaborative and cooperative group setting. By having students discuss and organize their points of view for one side of an argument they are able to discover new information and put knowledge into action.

Classroom debates help students learn through friendly competition, examine controversial topics and “strengthen skills in the areas of leadership, interpersonal influence, teambuilding, group problem solving, and oral presentation” (Leuser, n.d., para. 1).

In the second term, our Bachibac students have been learning how to debate in public defending their positions with well-built arguments. What’s more, at the end of the project, some groups have performed in front of the 2nde promotion, to show them a good example of what it will be expected from them in the near future.

Among other things, learning to debate and public speak reaps life long benefits.

  • Develop excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Develop excellent critical thinking skills.
  • Develop effective tools for research, organization and presentation.
  • Develop strategies to overcome fears of public speaking.

Well done!
